Civil Disputes & Litigation

If you’ve been wronged and it isn’t a police matter, you may be able to take legal action. We help resolve disputes quickly and sensibly, and in court when we need to.

Different kinds of claims have different time limits, so get advice early to find out whether you can still start proceedings.

Common disputes

Civil law covers disputes between:

  • Neighbours
  • Customers and suppliers
  • Business partners
  • Landlords and tenants
  • Buyers and sellers of property
  • Home owners and builders
  • Employers and employees
  • Executors and beneficiaries
  • Copyright and patent owners
  • Creditors and debtors
  • Accident victims

How the process works

  1. Try to resolve it first

Before any court proceedings, we look for a resolution that saves time and money: negotiation, mediation, conciliation or arbitration.

  2. Start proceedings

If that fails, proceedings begin. The forms and the court depend on the type of dispute, so advice matters at this stage.

  3. Pleadings and disclosure

Each side sets out its case, then both sides disclose the relevant documents.

  4. Trial, settlement or appeal

A judge hears the evidence and decides. Many matters settle before this point.
